The 68th Governor of the state of
North Carolina from 1973 to 1977.
His leadership provided energy and new ideas that shaped the modern North Carolina as the state found its role in technological development, urbanization and assumed a key national role leading to the 21st century. After his governorship, he retired and practiced law in Pinehurst, NC.
