When NYC actor (and occupational therapist), Michael Pizzi came to Pinehurst, he quickly discovered there were no professional musical theatre offerings in Moore County. So he informally asked around and found there was great interest. So he connected with the O’Neal School who had a 250 seat theatre with a stage uniquely designed for what he envisioned – producing small cast professional musical theatre shows and bringing Broadway actors to perform their cabaret shows . Thus was born the early stage of what is now called the Sandhills Repertory Theatre (SRT). All productions will donate a percentage of net profits to establish the Sandhills Theatre Arts in the Schools (STARTS) to help support the performing arts in Moore County schools. “It is tragic that there is so little understanding how the performing arts enhances learning, creates social networks and builds resilience, team building, self esteem and confidence in kids. Performing arts also fosters creativity and imagination and strengthens neurological links, which, in turn, enables learning and supports academics. Most people enjoy the arts and it is important to support the arts – either through attending performances, underwriting a show or simply volunteering to sell tickets or promote a show.” To volunteer, underwrite a show or to help in any way, please contact Michael Pizzi at [email protected].
