About This Event
Join us at the CAMEO on Saturday, October 11 at 4:30 PM for a special big-screen presentation of Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator.
Chaplin’s first true sound film, The Great Dictator (1940) is both a biting political satire and a courageous act of resistance. In it, Chaplin plays a dual role: a humble Jewish barber and the ruthless dictator Adenoid Hynkel, a thinly veiled parody of Hitler. Returning from years in a hospital after the Great War, the barber is shocked to find his community terrorized by Hynkel’s regime, and soon joins his neighbors in defiance.
A bold denunciation of fascism made before the U.S. entered World War II, the film was both controversial and groundbreaking upon release. Today, it is remembered for its daring satire, Chaplin’s remarkable dual performance, and its stirring final speech, which remains one of the most powerful calls for peace and humanity in cinema history.
