About This Event
COMBAT PAPER® transforms military uniforms into handmade paper. Come meet Veteran Drew Cameron as he explains the paper making process from military uniforms. He believes in this simple yet enduring premise that the plant fiber in rags can be transformed into paper. A uniform worn through military service carries with it stories and experiences that are in the woven threads. Creating paper and artwork from these fibers carries these same qualities. He has found that all of us are connected to the military. When these connections are discovered and shared, a deeper understanding between people can open and expand our collective beliefs about military service and war.
*Pulp Printing is a technique where highly beaten cotton fiber is pigmented and sprayed with a hand held spritzer through a mesh stencil to render printed images onto wet sheets of paper after they are freshly formed. The cotton fiber has been beaten for a duration that shortens it to the point where it can pass through a 110-mesh count silk screen, imbedding an image and further activating the paper. As the paper and printed image is pressed and dried, they become one, embedding the print into the sheet permanently.
