PORTRAITS
An evening of music for two pianos
in celebration of Women's History Month
4HANDS Piano Duo, formed by Czech pianist Kristina Henckel and Cuban pianist Amanda Virelles, returns to BPAC's Owens Auditorium to offer us Portraits, an exhilarating program that includes a cornucopia of two-piano music, featuring works by Amy Beach, Cecille Chaminade, Madeleine Dring, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. The performance will take place on two grand pianos - the magnificent BPAC's Steingraeber and Sӧhne concert grand piano and the Yamaha SFX concert grand piano brought to BPAC through the generous support of Sandhills Community College.
Henckel and Virelles formed the 4HANDS Piano Duo in 2019. Their repertoire includes masterpieces from the Classical, Romantic, 20th, and 21st century periods. Both pianists started performing careers in their home countries and completed doctoral degrees in piano performance and pedagogy in the United States. They coincided in the Sandhills area a few years back and decided to unite efforts to bring exciting programs of music for the piano ensemble, both in four hands and two piano configurations.
Since their first concert in 2019, Kristina and Amanda have released two recordings as a duet, the first "Rhapsody in White and Blue," with music by American composers, and the second "Slava," with music by Slavic composers. A third recording with music by Hispanic composers was released in 2024. Kristina and Amanda are Honorable mention awardees of The American Prize. Most recently, they received a Grand Prize and were named Artist of the Year by the International Youth Music Competition, 2022. In 2023, they had their NY City debut at Carnegie Hall in November and at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in September 2023. In addition to their active performing careers, both Kristina and Amanda hold full-time faculty positions in NC, Kristina at Sandhills Community College, and Amanda at Fayetteville State University.
Their solo and duo recordings are available on all digital platforms.
