Every kid dreams of going to space but very few know how to actually get there. And who better to show them out-of-this-world wonders than a NASA astronaut? Terry Virts, one of only four astronauts in history to have piloted a Space Shuttle, flown a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, performed space walks, and commanded the ISS, answers every curious youngster’s questions in The Astronaut's Guide To Leaving The Planet.

Harnessing excitement about space and space exploration is a great way to introduce children to STEM and Virts aims to inspire a love of science in every reader. Author of How to Astronaut, Virts explains everything you need to know to leave the planet with first-hand stories and activities. Filled with information, tips, stories, science, plus photographs and illustrations, THE ASTRONAUT'S GUIDE TO LEAVING THE PLANET covers everything a hopeful astronaut needs to know, including:

  • A brief history of space travel and important figures who explored the stars.
  • How to get on an astronaut track at school with a lesson on introducing oneself in nine languages.
  • What it’s like to train to be an astronaut with an activity to try physical training.
  • How one lives and works in zero gravity.
  • What does it take to be an astronaut?
  • What does blast off feel like?
  • What do you eat in space? (And how do you “eliminate” it?)

This is a kid's guide to leaving the planet from someone who's done it! THE ASTRONAUT'S GUIDE TO LEAVING THE PLANET will give aspiring astronauts everything they need to start their own journey to the stars while inspiring a sense of wonder in anyone who has ever looked up at the night sky.

COLONEL TERRY VIRTS earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989, and a master of aeronautical science degree in aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Selected by NASA in 2000, he was the pilot of STS-130 mission aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour. In March 2015, Virts assumed command of the International Space Station, and spent over 200 days on it. Virts is one of the stars (and photographers) of the IMAX film, A Beautiful Planet, released in April 2016. He is the author of How to Astronaut and A View from Above.
